Through most of its development from its beginnings as 3D Studio in the 1990, Autodesk 3ds Max couldn’t get much respect. Sure, it was great for creating such game titles as Tomb Raider, Halo, and The Sims, but creatives at top film and commercials houses thought it just a poor cousin to apps like Maya and Houdini. Max was great for game creators, they said, but it was no player in the high end of feature films and commercials. Actually, anyone paying attention found that this same “low end”, “low cost” software competed head-to-head with the top offerings. And 3ds Max has been crucial in turning out everything from high-end Super Bowl openings, effects for “Avatar” and the TV series “Lost”, architectural renderings of the new One World Trade Center and lots more. So get your curiosity going and join us at Showbiz Café this coming Tuesday evening, August 27th. You’ll hear Kim Lee, chair of the New York 3ds Max User Group, talk about its use in New York facilities to turn out top commercials. Kim will also show how this flexible app works with the top 3D printers to turn out some very cool objects, ones that could work well in your next film or commercial. If you are coming for our event – we’ll be taping it for later viewing – please RSVP via this Eventbrite link so that we have an idea of how many attendees to plan for!
